The outline brief was to create a traditional looking surround for a Vermont Intrepid II.
We had to increase the size of the fireplace opening to a size to suit the clients choice of appliance which meant opening up the existing fireplace and installing a reinforced concrete lintel. To the sides of the recess we supplied and bedded in lime mortar some new bricks from Penny's brick company. The hearth was laid on a concrete slab and is a natural stone floor tile with a brick edge detail to finish. The plaster around where the lintel was installed was made good and a distressed solid oak facing lintel installed.

The clients requests were very specific for this installation. The aim was to create a traditional looking fire surround in this country cottage which was undergoing major refurbishment. The client liked the appearance of old stone to form the surround. We had to comission a specialist stone mason the replicate the appearance of a planting trough that was in the clients garden for the surround and form a 2 piece hand rubbed stone hearth with a bull nosed edge detail. This coupled with a handmade brick recess forms an attractive combination. The appliance was then installed with a rear mounting to bring it forwards into the room and maximise its presence as a centrepiece and its output as a heat source.

The chimney stack in this instance was not in a very good state of repair due to there being a gas fire there previously which had damaged the mortar holding the bricks together. The client wanted a small stove which could be used in a smoke controlled zone so we opted for the Dovre 250 with smokeless kit. We then repaired the fabric of the chimney breast and renewed the constructional hearth by pouring a concrete slab. Old Clamp bricks were then set as a decorative hearth and pointed with a lime mortar. The stove was then installed and connected to a 904 grade chimney liner to create a seamless link from inside to outside. The result is a simple looking installaiton.
Great Yorkshire Show
This is the installation at the Great Yorkshire Show where the Forestry Comission kindly invited us to demonstrate wood as a fuel in their pavillion.
The purpose was to promote wood and wood burning appliances as a fuel of the furture. We were able to demonstrate not only logs but also an array of alternative fuels from sustainable sources such as briquettes and pellets. The stove is a Franco Belge Monaco in black and is attached to a Schniedel ICS 25 twin wall chimney system. Hopefully we will get the opportunity to display another appliance next year and keep promoting wood as a carbon neutral alternative to toher heat sources. For details on wood fuel please visit the www.forestry.gov.uk.

In this case the fire surround had been boarded up and there was a wall mountes electric fire on the wall. The old fireplace recess was opened up and the constructional hearth replaced. A mixture of bricks from The York Handmade Brick Company were then used to create a rustic surround which was coupled with a black slate hearth and a Dovre 250 stove with smokeless kit.

Hot Box stoves exposed my chimney breast and re-pointed all of the bricks. They then set a new concrete hearth and tiled the surface with these black tiles before installing my stove. The service was fast, efficient and the end result speaks for itself.

The brief here was to remove and make safe the existing gas fire and set aside for the client. We then increased the size of the fireplace opening to suit the clients choice of appliance which is a Franco Belge (Monaco).
Once the size of the opening had been increased we created a traditional inglenook affect to the back and sides of the fireplace using handmade bricks bedded and pointed in a lime mortar. The hearth was then constructed from the same bricks to give a very traditional feel to the fireplace which we think suits the style and character of the property (North Yorkshire).
![]() The brief was to create a surround in the existing opening out of handmade bricks bedded and pointed using a lime mortar to provide a traditional look. We then had a bespoke one piece stone hearth made to the exact measurements. We also supplied a piece of reclaimed oak to act as a 'faux' lintel which we restored, face mounted and finished with linseed oil to accentuate the grain. The affect we feel matches the character of the property and the appliance extremely well. (Great Ouseburn) |

![]() The client had already decided on the type of appliance which was suitable for the room. However the opening was too small, unfinished and there was no hearth. We increased the size of the opening and provided a simple plaster finish to give a contemporary look. We also provided a one piece stone hearth which we then sealed with a stone sealant to bring out the different veins. (Harrogate) |
