Fuel guidance for Charnwood stoves

Charnwood manuals repeatedly stress the importance of dry, well-seasoned wood. Wet or unseasoned logs can reduce output, blacken the glass and create tar or creosote deposits in the stove and chimney.

As a practical rule, use dry seasoned or kiln-dried logs with a moisture content of 20% or below. Avoid treated timber, painted wood, household waste, liquid fuels and unsuitable solid fuels.

Charnwood stove maintenance and chimney sweeping

Your Charnwood manual should be used alongside regular professional maintenance. The throat plate and flueways need to be kept clean, the glass and seals should be checked, and the chimney should be swept at suitable intervals depending on use, fuel quality and flue conditions.

Many Charnwood manuals state that the chimney should be swept at least twice a year and that the stove should be serviced professionally at least once a year. Where a stove replaces an open fire, an additional sweep after the first period of use may also be recommended because old soot deposits can loosen.
