The case for wood fuel?

In recent years, there has been much media speculation regarding wood burning emissions and the environment. The news headlines are full of wood burners are going to be banned, PM 2.5 has carcinogenic effects. wood stoves contribute to more emissions than cars, etc…

Such speculation is fuelled (excuse the pun) by left wing ideology which focuses solely on burning wood rather than the entire lifecycle of growing, harvesting and processing wood as a fuel. Further, the argument fails to suggest an alternative to household heating and seems content with rubbishing any claims that wood fuel may be a sustainable source home heating.

However, the facts surround the use of wood as a fuel for heating are homes is arguably very different to the media portrayal.

There is evidence to suggest wood has been used as a fuel since before 3350 BC based upon the discovery of mummified remains known as Otzi.

Interestingly, about their person, the remains had a range of tools including complex firelighting equipment, most likely used to ignite and burn wood for heating and cooking.

Burning wood fuel today

Today, we have taken wood burning to a new level and are using highly efficient appliances to burn logs and other derivatives such as pellets.

Further, wood fuel may be considered carbon efficient based upon the lifecycle of a tree which taken in as much carbon whilst it is growing as it releases when it is burnt.

However, it is important act woodlands are appropriately managed and production of fuel for wood-burning remains as local to the end user as practicable to further minimise carbon emissions created by forestry practices and transportation of raw material to be processed into fuel.

Interestingly, there are already European and UK standards for testing which Woodsure must certify compliance with. These standards are set our below in a handy drop down menu.

However, before we outline the standards, it is important to understand which fuels can be certified by Woodsure.

Furthermore, the scheme as it currently stands, is not exhaustive, but is likely to see additions in the future.

However, at Hot Box ®, standards for wood chips and pellets are not relevant to us. Therefore, we have only included logs and briquettes for use in our fabulous range of wood burning stoves. 

Which fuels fall under Woodsure Rules?

    • Woodchip | Often used for producing west in appropriate biomass boilers.
    • Pellets | Used in Biomass pellet boilers and certain stoves.
    • Briquettes | An alternative to logs, made from compressed combustible matter.
    • Firewood | Good old fashioned logs for woodburners.
