Stove Project Overview

We were asked to remove an old,  unused stove and replace it with a British-made wood-burning stove with a high-efficiency rating. The obvious choice was burley-wood-burners/”>Burley Stoves who create the cleanest and most efficient wood-burning stoves in the world. Taking the size of the room into account, our project manager suggested burley-thorncombe-9404-c-ecodesign-ready/”>Burley Thorncombe, a 4 kW stove that not only offers a sleek design but also powerful technology. It is armed with a catalytic converter that aids combustion resulting in higher efficiency than stoves without it.

INSTALLATION

Our operatives were required to prepare the recess for the installation of the stove, which included the following steps:

  • Provide temporary protection to the floor coverings through the hallway and into the area where the installation is to be carried out (heavy gauge plastic sheeting left in position for the duration of the works).
  • Remove the current stove, flue pipe, and closure plate including the debris above.
  • Remove the current hearth.
  • Remove the wooden beam.
  • Supply and install a new reinforced concrete and steel lintel.
  • To the holes left in the sides of the recess provide a Fireboard Finish in preparation for painting by others.
  • Make good the existing concrete substrate of the constructional hearth as required in preparation for the receipt of the new finish.
  • Supply and install a new 2-piece 20mm thick decorative slate hearth.
  • Dispose of all debris as works progress.

Once the recess was ready, the chimney was swept and lined with a Schiedel 316-grade twin skin flue liner. The stove was placed into a position and a galvanised steel plate was fixed to the underside of the recess and sealed between the closure plate and chimney with high-temperature sealant. The stove was connected with the liner using twin wall chimney components as well as a stove pipe. The chimney flue was completed with the installation of a pot-hanging cowl.

Once all debris was disposed of and the area where the stove was installed was cleaned, our HETAS registered engineers performed a smoke test using the one and only Firestarter. The smoke test ensures that there is an adequate degree of draw and that all connections are sealed. Finally, in accordance with building regulations, a CO/ Carbon Monoxide Alarm and a chimney notice plate were installed.
