Flexible fue liners are used to connect new solid fuel appliances into existing masonry chimneys.

A flexible flue liner can be fitted inside most masonry chimneys and offers a cost effective solution to effective smoke and flu gas exhaustion.

Importantly, when installing a flexible flue liner, it should be sized appropriately.

A flue liner should be the same size as the outlet on your wood burner or appliance.

For example, if your wood burning stove has a 6" or 150mm smoke outlet, then your flue liner should be 6" or 150mm.

These stove installation components make the process of installing a flexible flue liner easier.

Moreover, each component part ensures a gas tight fit where a joint is created.

Below, we have outlined just some of the component parts needed to install a flexible flue liner, from the top down:

• Rain cap or terminal, the screw fit options from Schiedel are high quality and interconnect perfectly with their range of flexible flue liners.
• Flexi to stove connector, an extremely important component that forms the key connection points t between a flexible flue liner and stove pipe. This component needs to be bomb proof as it will bear the brunt of the heat produced by a wood burner.

Further, a range of increasing adapters are alas available and in the event that you need to connect a section of twin wall flue to your flexible liner, there is a component on offer.

Sizes of flexible flue liners

At Hot Box, we install a range of wood burning appliances with a wide variety of flue sizes.

The range from Schiedel offers the following sizes from 80mm - 200mm.

• 80mm. flexible flue liners, seldom used for wood burning applications but are useful to create direct air connections in some instances.
• 100mm flex liners, used for air connections, not often for wood burning or solid fuel applications.
• 125mm flexible flue linings, a main stay of any stove installation process. many wood burning stoves have a 125mm connection.
• 155mm flexible chimney liner, frequently used to install larger format wood burning appliances.
• Next up, 180mm flex liners are used with large format inset appliances such as those on offer from Stuv and Spartherm.
• 200mm flexible chimney liners are appropriate when fitting bigger stove models, often those operating boiler units may require a flue liner of this size.

Finding the right flue liner

Importantly, a flexible flue liner should be sized to suit the flue outlet of your wood burning stove. 

For example, if you were to purchase a Parkray Aspect 4 wood burner from Hot Box, the flue outlet is 125mm or 5". As such, you should also purchase a 5" or 125mm flue liner when connecting to an existing masonry chimney. 

Further, you should consider how you intend to use your stove. 

There is a difference between wood burning and multi fuel burners. 

Smokeless fuels are being phased out and a core focus on wood burning stoves prevails. 

If you are considering only burning wood fuel, logs or biomass based briquettes, a 316L grade flue liner will suffice. 

However, if you are considering using smokeless fuels, you should opt for a 904L grade liner which is more robust and can better cope with the bi products of combustion when burning smokeless fuels. 

At Hot Box, we advocate the use of wood in wood burning stoves and see little need for the introduction of smokeless fuels in such appliances. 

Moreover, based upon our 15 years in the industry, we have always used the same flue liners from a single manufacturer, Schiedel. 

Installing a flexible flue liner

Installing a liner into an existing chimney can be tricky. It is best to ensure you have cleaned the chimney first to remove any residual soot or any other obstructions that could pose difficulty during installation.

REMEMBER! Once your liner is installed this work must be visually inspected as per the UK building regulations, Document J. It is best to have a HETAS registered installer complete your liner installations.

Having this check / competent person install the flue liner ensures it has been properly installed; furthermore that it is the right size for the appliance it connects to.
