What are Eco Design Ready Stoves?
Regulations are changing to future proof the UK wood burning stove industry. Eco design ready stoves are the wood burning stoves of the future.
Eco design ready stoves have been designed to reduce emissions by burning wood more efficiently and completely.
However, the reduction emissions does not stop with stove manufacturers.
At Hot Box, we have always believed firmly in the use of quality fuel.
As important as the stove is the wood burnt in it. Alongside Eco Design Ready Stoves, The Stove industry alliance have also launched their wood sure label.
The Woodsure initiative is aimed at controlling the supply of wood fuel that is oven ready, with a moisture content of less than 20%.
Why install Eco design ready stoves versus alternatives?
Clearly, the main driver for installing such an appliance is the environment.
Further, increased demand for wood fuel has seen prices jump in recent years.
Particulate emissions from wood burning, without doubt, need to be reduced.
Should the UK be serious about using wood as a sustainable heating source, manufacturers, installers and consumers need information to assist them in making informed choices.
More so, wood burning, is a great way to heat our homes, it is clean, health and provides a real focal point.
Eco design ready stoves are there to ensure wood burning is here to stay.
When choosing your next stove, Hot Box Stoves will be driving consumers towards the most efficient models.
Reduce emissions and save money on wood whilst doing so, surely an attractive proposition?
The reasons for the change in legislation…
Since 2011, the UK has seen a spike in the sale and installation of solid fuel appliances versus alternatives.
Wood burning and multifuel stoves have proved a popular choice.
However, it is clear that the industry is in its infancy.
Interestingly, a number of the appliances and installations have, to date, been cost driven. Consumers often opting for cheaper stove models versus better quality appliances to save on costs.
Lets face it, having a stove installed properly is not a cheap undertaking.
Cheap, cheerful, inefficient stoves and components have carved out their market share. In turn, such appliances and installations, coupled with poor fuel, have lead to increased emissions. More so, this has given burning wood, otherwise carbon neutral, some bad press in recent years!
The shift to more efficient wood burning stoves….
Clearly, it is time for change. As we embrace wood as a fuel and a heat source, we strive to invest in better appliances for our homes.
Hot Box Stoves have always aimed to provide both quality wood burning appliances and installation components. Further, all services at Hot Box are undertaken by qualified HETAS engineers, even the initial survey!
Moreover, the drive to ensure the supply of quality wood fuel across the industry is key to a sustainable wood burning market.
Later this year, 2018, Hot Box will launch its very own initiative to promote effective use of wood burning appliances.
It is our belief, that by adopting proper lighting techniques and complete fuel combustion, emissions can be further reduced.
A range of new products from Hot Box will be at the forefront of reducing emissions from wood burning stoves. Is a more convenient approach to wood burners the key to their future success?
Interesting facts about wood burning and emissions…
- The Majority of emissions form a solid fuel appliance are created during initial lighting and when the fire dies down.
- Arguably, a tree, over the course of its life, absorbs as much carbon dioxide as it releases when burnt.

Can Eco design ready stoves be used in smoke controlled zones?
DEFRA exempt stoves have allowed owners to burn wood in smoke controlled areas without restriction. Particulate emission limits for Eco Design Ready Stoves is 55% lower than for DEFRA rated appliances.
Currently, the new legislation suggests that if you want to burn wood in a smoke controlled zone, you should choose an appliance that is both DEFRA exempt and Eco Design Ready.
