Can you have a wood burning stove without a chimney
Can you have a wood burning stove without a chimney, we at Hot Box Stoves are often asked this question?
The short answer to this question is both yes and no depending upon how you consider a chimney.
A wood-burning stove will always need to be connected to a flue which allows the bi-products of combustion a safe passage to the atmosphere.

Twin wall chimney systems…
Hot Box can offer a range of twin wall chimney system installations that eliminate the need for a traditional masonry chimney breast or flue.
The images below depict a modern wood burner on a glass hearth, the stove is a Spartherm Passo XS, available via our Spartherm page.
As you can see, the stove in this case does not have a chimney in this modern extension. Therefore, we have set up the appliance to be installed on a twin wall chimney system.
Such twin wall chimney systems are a great way to install a stove. Further, they provide a seamless and gas-tight connection to the appliance, a layer of insulation between two skins of metal means that the flue gasses are always kept warm and the draught improved.
More often twin wall chimney systems are used in new build properties or extensions where it is not cost-effective or necessary to construct a masonry chimney stack.
However, should you want to see a traditional masonry stack externally, why not consider installing a twin wall inside it? Using this method, the twin wall flue is masked externally and traditional detailing can be used around roof penetrations.
Which System should I choose?

Can you have a wood burning stove in a corner?
Even where a masonry chimney is available in a property some clients opt to position their stove elsewhere.
Further, a twin wall chimney system, in most circumstances, it is possible to position your stove to suit your needs.
Below, a twin wall chimney system is mounted off the top of the stove and penetrates an external wall.
How much does a twin wall chimney cost?
Costs for twin wall chimney systems can vary depending on the manufacturer. On average, the cost of a good quality system is around £100.00 per m. Bends and connection components can add up so it is best to keep thee to a minimum if possible.
Costs will also depend on how much work is needed to get the chimney system out of the building and make it comply with regulations.
For instance, taking a twin wall chimney system through a flat roof is likely to be fairly cost-effective.
Comparably, if you need to go up through a floor and then a roof the costs are likely to rise.

We live in an apartment with a balcony above us. There is a space where a stove can go with an external wall but does the twin wall chimney have to be a certain height away from the building or as long as it’s outside is it OK?

The chimney would need to extend at least as high as the ridge of the building or if a flat roof building above any parapet. it would need to be away from opening windows and at least 2700mm horizontally from another structure that was higher.

me and my partner are looking at putting a log burner into our living room. There is a fake fireplace already there but no chimney. the Fireplace is on a joining wall but is only about 1m away from the external wall. What would be the best solution for instilation of the flue?
