Stove Project Overview

We were asked to remove an old open fireplace and replace it with a wood-burning stove. Our customers wanted to avoid widening the recess, therefore, the size of the stove was the deciding factor. The one and only candidate suitable for the fireplace opening was Salamander‘s Hobbit, a multi-fuel stove.

The Hobbit SE is specifically designed for installations where the space for a stove might be more limited, and this makes it the ideal choice for small fireplaces where larger stoves simply won’t fit. The Hobbit is a small cast iron multi-fuel stove that is able to burn wood, coal, or eco logs, and it fully complies with the new Eco Design 2022 regulations, which makes it suitable for any installations after the 1st January 2022. Don’t be fooled by its size, it is quite powerful and produces 4 kW of heat.

INSTALLATION

As with every installation, the works began with placing temporary protection in all areas where work was to be carried out. To begin with, the open appliance was removed, and the fireplace opening, as well as the chimney, were swept. Once all debris was removed, the chimney was lined with a 316-grade twin skin flue liner that is suitable for wood-burning stoves. Next, the new stove was placed in the correct position and a galvanized steel plate was fixed to the underside of the recess and sealed with high-temperature sealant. The customer’s new stove was connected with the liner using twin wall chimney components as well as a stove pipe. The chimney flue was completed with the installation of a pot hanging cowl. Once all debris was disposed of and the area where the stove was installed was cleaned, our HETAS registered engineers performed a smoke test using the Firestarter. The smoke test ensures there is an adequate degree of draw and that all connections are sealed. Finally, in accordance with building regulations, a CO/ Carbon Monoxide Alarm and a chimney notice plate were installed.
