Hot Box ® Charnwood Guide

A complete guide to Charnwood stoves

The Charnwood range is extensive. Choosing between models involves considerably more than selecting a stove by appearance alone. Heat requirement, fireplace dimensions, flue diameter, chimney arrangement, ventilation, external air, clearances to combustible materials and the way you intend to use the appliance all matter.

Hot Box has therefore developed this section as a practical Charnwood knowledge and buying resource, combining retail information with the experience of specifying and installing wood burning appliances.

You can use the resources below whether you are buying your first Charnwood stove, replacing an older appliance, researching technical requirements or looking after a Charnwood already installed in your home.

For manufacturer information, visit the official Charnwood website.

Choose by Heat Requirement

Charnwood stoves by heat output

Heat output should be matched to the property rather than chosen solely by appearance. Room volume, insulation, glazing, air leakage and how adjoining spaces are used can all affect the appropriate appliance size.

Compact & lower-output stoves

Well suited to smaller living rooms, cottages, studies, snugs and energy-efficient spaces where excessive heat output can quickly make the room uncomfortable.

  • Charnwood Aire 3
  • Charnwood Aire 4
  • Charnwood Cranmore 3
  • Charnwood C-Four
  • Charnwood Country 4

5kW-class stoves

The most popular category for many UK living rooms, offering useful heat without automatically requiring a permanently open room air vent purely because nominal output exceeds 5kW.

  • Charnwood Aire 5
  • Charnwood Cranmore 5
  • Charnwood C-Five
  • Charnwood Skye 5
  • Charnwood Arc 5

Larger-output stoves

Designed for larger rooms, open-plan spaces, high ceilings and properties with greater heat loss. Correct sizing becomes especially important with higher-output appliances.

Which Charnwood stove should you choose?

Several Charnwood models occupy a similar heat-output category but offer very different aesthetics and price points. The table below provides a quick starting point before moving into individual model specifications.

Model Character Typical use July 2026 UK price Hot Box view
Aire 3 Compact contemporary Smaller rooms and efficient homes From £1,459 inc VAT A strong choice where a full-sized 5kW appliance could simply be too much stove.
Cranmore 3 Compact traditional Cottages, period rooms and smaller fireplaces From £1,459 inc VAT Particularly attractive where traditional styling is important but room heat demand is modest.
C-Five Simple and traditional General-purpose living rooms From £1,359 inc VAT One of the straightforward value choices within the Charnwood range.
Aire 5 Modern with large viewing window Contemporary and transitional interiors From £1,659 inc VAT One of our strongest all-round choices where flame picture and contemporary styling matter.
Cranmore 5 Refined traditional Period homes and classic fireplace openings From £1,699 inc VAT A particularly useful alternative to the Aire 5 where the interior calls for softer, more traditional styling.
Skye 5 Premium contemporary Higher-specification installations From £2,699 inc VAT Worth considering where appliance design, combustion performance and premium positioning justify the additional spend.
Arc 5 Cylindrical contemporary Freestanding architectural installations From £2,599 inc VAT Best treated as a design feature rather than merely a conventional fireplace stove.
Haven Heating and cooking Kitchens, rural homes and lifestyle installations From £3,999 inc VAT A different proposition entirely, combining room heating with genuine cooking capability.

Important: the most suitable stove is not always the one with the closest nominal output. Fireplace dimensions, chimney configuration, ventilation, clearances and how the room is used should also be considered.

From the Installation Side

Hot Box installer’s Charnwood recommendations

Specifications and photographs only tell part of the story. These are the Charnwood models we would commonly place on a shortlist when discussing real installations with customers.

Charnwood Aire 3

Best for: compact rooms and modern properties.

A useful appliance where the customer wants the visual quality of the Aire range without putting an unnecessarily powerful stove into a smaller room. Particularly worth considering in better-insulated homes where traditional sizing rules can result in excessive heat.

Charnwood Aire 5

Best for: contemporary all-round installations.

The Aire 5 is one of the easiest models to shortlist for a typical modern living-room project. Its generous viewing area gives it strong presence without making the appliance itself look excessively heavy.

Charnwood Cranmore 5

Best for: period properties and classic interiors.

The Cranmore 5 works especially well where the stove needs to sit comfortably within an older fireplace or property without looking aggressively contemporary. It is often one of the first models we discuss for period homes.

Charnwood C-Five

Best for: straightforward value and timeless styling.

The C-Five remains appealing where the brief is simply for a robust, restrained Charnwood wood burner without paying for the styling or additional positioning of the premium ranges.

Charnwood Skye 5

Best for: premium installations.

The Skye 5 makes more sense where the stove is an important element within a higher-specification room and the customer values refined design and combustion performance rather than making the decision entirely on price.

Charnwood Haven

Best for: kitchens and heating-with-cooking projects.

The Haven is not simply another room heater. It can become part of the way a kitchen or rural living space is used, making it particularly interesting for projects where heating, cooking and lifestyle are deliberately combined.

The Charnwood Range

Charnwood stove families explained

Each Charnwood family has its own design character and intended use. Understanding the ranges can make narrowing the choice considerably easier.

Charnwood Aire

The Aire range combines clean contemporary styling with large glazed doors and a strong view of the fire. The July 2026 range includes Aire 3, Aire 4, Aire 5 and Aire 7, alongside wider-format Aire 300, Aire 400, Aire 500 and Aire 700 appliances.

Charnwood Cranmore

The Cranmore family has a softer and more traditional appearance, making it particularly well suited to cottages, Victorian and Georgian properties, renovated period houses and traditional fireplace openings. Models include Cranmore 3, Cranmore 5, Cranmore 7 and the Cranmore Insert.

Charnwood C-Series

The C-Series includes C-Four, C-Five, C-Six, C-Seven and C-Eight, with additional configurations on selected models. The range has deliberately restrained styling and remains a strong option where robustness, simplicity and value are priorities.

Charnwood Skye

The Skye range sits towards the premium end of Charnwood’s room-heating products, combining advanced combustion with contemporary design. Options include Skye 5, Skye 7 and the wider Skye E700 D.

Charnwood Island

Island is one of Charnwood’s long-established stove families, characterised by substantial construction, generous fireboxes and a distinctive traditional form. The range includes Island I, Island II and Island III.

Cove, Arc, Bay & Haven

Cove brings a cleaner architectural form, Arc uses a cylindrical contemporary design, Bay provides insert and freestanding options, while Haven combines solid-fuel room heating with cooking capability.

Charnwood Installation York

Installing a Charnwood stove correctly

Choosing the appliance is only one part of a successful stove installation. The chimney, flue system, hearth, fireplace, ventilation and clearance arrangement all need to work with the specific Charnwood model selected.

Hot Box ® Stoves can advise on both existing masonry chimneys and new prefabricated chimney systems. We can also help establish whether the proposed stove is appropriate before expensive fireplace or building works begin.

A typical Charnwood installation may include:

  • Initial site survey or installation assessment
  • Heat requirement and model recommendation
  • Existing chimney inspection
  • Flexible chimney liner where appropriate
  • Vitreous enamel connecting pipe
  • Register or closure plate
  • Chimney pot, terminal or cowl
  • Hearth supply or alteration
  • Fireplace preparation
  • Permanent room ventilation where required
  • External combustion-air connection where suitable
  • Commissioning and smoke testing
  • User handover
  • HETAS certification where applicable

Where there is no suitable masonry chimney, a twin-wall insulated chimney system may provide the appropriate solution.

Installation resources

Installer’s note

Never assume an existing liner, hearth or fireplace opening will automatically suit a replacement Charnwood stove. Flue diameter, appliance clearances and ventilation requirements can differ between models.

DEFRA • EcoDesign • clearSkies

Charnwood stoves and smoke control areas

Many UK towns and cities include Smoke Control Areas. Where smoke-control legislation applies, the exact appliance and fuel combination must be suitable for legal use.

The July 2026 Charnwood price information states that listed appliances are clearSkies rated and EcoDesign compliant, with nearly all models being DEFRA exempt. The status of the exact appliance should nevertheless be checked before purchase and installation.

Fuel quality matters

Correct fuel is fundamental to stove performance, emissions, chimney condition and viewing-glass cleanliness.

  • Use suitably dry firewood
  • Aim for moisture content of 20% or below
  • Do not burn treated or painted timber
  • Do not burn household waste
  • Use a moisture meter where necessary
  • Operate the appliance in accordance with its instructions
  • Have the chimney swept at suitable intervals
  • Maintain internal stove components as required

Options & Accessories

Charnwood installation options explained

Accessories can significantly change how an appliance is installed and used. Compatibility should always be confirmed against the exact stove model.

Charnwood features and accessories

External air kits can provide combustion air directly from outside on compatible models. This can be particularly useful in modern or relatively airtight properties and in projects where room pressure, ventilation and mechanical extraction need careful consideration.

A vertical rear flue adaptor can allow the connecting flue to rise vertically while using a rear appliance outlet. On suitable installations this can provide a cleaner arrangement while retaining access to the stove top.

Some installation arrangements can be influenced by appliance-specific heat shielding and tested clearance data. Required distances should be established from the instructions for the exact model rather than assumed from another stove.

Flue boilers are available for selected applications and can transfer a proportion of the appliance’s heat to a suitable hot-water or heating system. These installations require competent system design and appropriate safety controls.

Cooking plates can be fitted to compatible rear-flued arrangements and provide a cast surface for warming, boiling or simmering. Compatibility varies by appliance and flue arrangement.

Matt Black is the standard finish. Selected models can be special ordered in alternative finishes including Green, Blue, Almond, Bronze, Brown, Pewter and Gunmetal. Availability should be confirmed against the exact model.

Long-term stove ownership can require replacement glass, rope seals, bricks, baffles, throat plates, paint and other service components. Hot Box can help identify suitable parts for many Charnwood appliances.

Lighting & Everyday Use

Lighting a Charnwood stove with Hot Box ® Firestarter

Hot Box ® Firestarter has been developed as a simple way of establishing a fire without conventional kindling. It can be used with suitable dry logs in wood burning stoves, including Charnwood appliances.

Always follow the lighting procedure for the exact Charnwood model. Air controls should be set correctly during start-up and fuel should only be added in a way that allows the appliance and chimney to establish a reliable draught.

  • No conventional kindling required
  • Simple stove-lighting routine
  • Suitable for wood burners and fireplaces
  • Use with dry, appropriate firewood
Visit Hot Box Firestarter

Good burning starts with good fuel

Use appropriately dry logs, check moisture content where necessary and follow Charnwood’s operating instructions for your model. Poor fuel can reduce performance regardless of the quality of the appliance.

Charnwood FAQs

Frequently asked questions about Charnwood stoves

Answers to common questions about Charnwood appliances, pricing, installation, manuals, colours and specification.

Charnwood is a long-established British stove manufacturer producing wood burning and multi-fuel appliances across traditional and contemporary ranges. The brand offers a broad choice of models along with technical documentation, accessories and long-term spare-parts support.

Charnwood stoves are designed and manufactured on the Isle of Wight by A.J. Wells & Sons. Hot Box ® Stoves supplies Charnwood appliances online and through our York showroom.

Prices vary significantly by model. The July 2026 UK retail pricing used on this page ranges from the Country 4 at £1,049 inc VAT through to premium and larger appliances costing several thousand pounds. Installation, flue systems, hearths, accessories and building work are additional. See our Charnwood stove price guide.

There is no single best model for every property. Aire 5 is a strong contemporary all-rounder, Cranmore 5 suits more traditional interiors, C-Five provides a simpler value-led option, Skye 5 occupies a more premium position and Haven combines heating with cooking. Room heat requirement and installation constraints should be considered before choosing.

Models such as Aire 3, Cranmore 3 and C-Four may be worth considering where room heat demand is modest. Proper sizing is particularly important in well-insulated properties where an oversized appliance can make a room uncomfortable.

Popular choices within the 5kW class include Aire 5, Cranmore 5, C-Five, Skye 5 and Arc 5. The decision is often driven as much by styling, fireplace arrangement and budget as by nominal output.

Many Charnwood appliances are DEFRA exempt for use within Smoke Control Areas when operated in accordance with the relevant approval. Always confirm the status of the exact model before purchase.

Hot Box ® Stoves can supply Charnwood appliances for suitable supply-only projects as well as providing installation support. We recommend confirming appliance suitability, flue requirements and fireplace constraints before ordering.
